Elbert Shewmake, age 94, passed away on March 30th surrounded by his loving family.A long-time resident of Mesquite, Elbert joined his wife of 67 years, Wyona, in heaven after a courageous fight following an accident at home.As stated in Timothy 4:7, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith”. Elbert was born in Post, Texas to his father, Rev. Amos W. Shewmake and mother, Rose Etta, both preceding him in death.He was one of eleven children and was preceded in death by brothers R.E., A.W. Jr., Alfred, J.B., Marvin, W.K., George, and John Shewmake along with one sister, Lena Cross. Survivors include son Steve Shewmake and wife, Mary; son Pat Shewmake and wife, Debbie; daughter Cindy Shewmake; and daughter Beverly York and husband, Jeff.He is also survived by four grandsons:Chris Shewmake and wife, Holly, Matt Shewmake, Todd Shewmake, and David York.Great grandchildren include Madison and Audrey Shewmake.One sister, Christine Studer, also survives him along with numerous nieces and nephews. Elbert’s faith was always the foundation of his life and he raised his family as the spiritual leader of the home.He was a founding member and deacon of Fireside Dr. Baptist Church.Throughout his time with the church, he served in whatever role was needed including maintenance, leading music, and working tirelessly to make his church a spiritual home for his family and others.He also worked for many years at Cook Machinery and later as an electrician for Mesquite ISD and retired after 22 years as a devoted employee.He loved his job with the district and made many friends throughout the years. Elbert enjoyed and loved his family and his proudest moments included the accomplishments of his children and the birth of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.As a great example of what a father and leader should be, Elbert guided his family and friends by love, commitment, and faith.Diligent in all that he did, always giving his best, he was a true friend and loving father.He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.
