Hazel Bartek, age 85, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2014. Born July 6, 1929, to Arnold and Lura (Sudduth) Allen in Myrtle Springs, TX, Hazel Virginia Allen was the second of five children.At age 8, the family moved to west Texas so their father could work on a farm.There, she was raised in a small community in Nolan county, TX attending Divide school, graduating high school in 1948.She often spoke of her growing up years and fondly remembered her childhood, singing in church and playing basketball.As often as she could, she attended the annual Divide homecoming to stay in touch with friends and visit her old homeplace. After high school, Hazel moved to Dallas with her aunt and uncle to start a job at the Frito Lay company and in 1953, married John David Vaughn of Forney, TX.Living in Lawton OK, Nederland, TX and Morgan City, LA they had three children, Lewis, Michele and Kenny.After the death of her husband Johnny in 1966, she settled the family in Forney. Hazel attended business school and worked downtown Dallas at Texas Oil and Gas for several years, then at the Forney State Bank for about 12 years.She married Jerry L. Bartek of Dallas in 1976 and moved to Rowlett to live for 30 years.She retired from Lone Star Gas in Rowlett.Soon after her husband Jerry died in 2008, she returned to Forney to be closer to church and her friends. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Forney for over 45 years.She showed many kindnesses to those in need through the Ruth Sunday School class ministry as well through causes like St. Jude's Hospital for Children, Feed the Children, Veterans of Foreign Wars and visiting local care homes.She had many talents and hobbies to include sewing, ceramics and doll making, ball room dancing, and baking a favorite orange slice cake. Also preceding Hazel in death were her parents, sister Gladys Allen Stillman, and son Lewis D. Vaughn. Surviving family members are her daughter Michele (Vaughn) Fetsch and husband Rick of Rhineland, son Kenny Vaughn and wife Melanie of Rockwall; daughter-in-law Donna Vaughn of Lewisville; sister Inez Treadaway and husband Bill of Roscoe, brothers AJ Allen and wife Jeanne of Arlington, Fred Allen and wife Sally of Weatherford; aunts Dorothy Linder and husband Bill of Roswell, NM, and Aline Allen of Yantis; grandchildren John Vaughn, Shannon Vaughn and husband Allen Speakman, Danny Bastas and wife Brenda, Carl Bastas, and Wesley Vaughn; three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Visitation is 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, immediately followed by the funeral service starting at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Forney, TX, Jerry Griffin officiating.She will be laid to rest at the Heath cemetery.Funeral services are directed by New Hope Funeral Home, Sunnyvale, TX, www.newhopefh.com
