They anchor their families. They provide role models. They make you get summer jobs for your own good. Dirt doesn't get on Dad's nerves, and he couldn't care less if the dog licks you in the face. Fathers race through airports and catch last-minute flights so they can be there in time to yell encouragement when you get up to bat in a Little League game. They give each character a different voice when they read you bedtime stories. They teach you how to drive a stick shift, so you can impress the boys at school. Baseballs, footballs, long hikes in the mountains.Fathers come home from the worst day of work in their career and ask how things went for you at school today. They learn your trick of pitting him against your mother when you want something, and don't let you get away with it.They cry when you leave home. Painting the house. Four-wheel-driving.Spam, the edible kind. Dad let you stay inside the car at the carwash. He helped you with your algebra even as you wished it had never been invented. He let you win until the day came when you could beat him. Dad picked you up after ballet lessons every Tuesday and Thursday without fail - well, almost without fail. The one time he forgot you, and left you sitting on the parking-lot wall after dark, he rushed back for you and apologized profusely, making you wonder what the fuss is about. Dads enjoy "the big bump" as much as the kids whose tummies feel momentarily weightless when he guns the car over a dip in the road. Dad unknowingly introduces you to your future husband, setting up the richest segment of happiness in your life. Dad accepts your mistakes even if you don't.He shows you the value of a friendship by the many friends he makes through life.He lets you sip his beer when Mama's not looking. Dad teaches you how to fish with a purple worm, and takes the catfish off the hook so you don't get finned. He discloses to you the magical properties of neatsfoot oil on a baseball glove. He agrees with you that fishing is a better way for a boy to spend a week in the summertime than Vacation Bible School, but he also insists that a man never stands as tall as when he bends his knees in prayer. He cried, too, when the vet had to put Old Charley to sleep. Fifteen-year-old sneakers.Keeping the cars running.Sage advice. No one in the world worries more about you than Dad. -Michael Hogue -God Saw You- God Saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you and whispered, "Come with Me." With tearful eyes we watched you slowly fade away. Although we loved you dearly, we would not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, your hard-working hands put to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
