Richard Eric Finlan

December 18, 1946 — May 23, 2014

Richard Eric Finlan (Rick) was a published writer, philosopher, famous pro se lawyer, entrepreneur since the age of 15 who wanted to give back to the community and did in many ways. He successfully sued The School Board of Dallas early in his career. The aforementioned board had grifted 25 million robbing the children of Dallas already scarce education money.Their attempted misappropriation of funds to line their own pockets was brought to the public’s attention, taken to court, and restored to the teachers and children of the DISD. That was the type of man Rick was. He had many loves and passions in his life.Transitions were sometimes fluid, sometimes halting, but he was just a man, but he was loved foibles and all. He was loved for his motto in life:Give comfort and show mercy. After forty years of research his book, Rethinking Christianity, will be published posthumously; it will follow his preexisting body of work. This book will not be seen as his swan song, but as a new beginning for many. In the end he was just a man, a person , homo sapien sapien, bipedal evolved from an upright walking species, as are we all. What made him unique? The man he was He will be carried in the hearts of those he loved and those who loved him.Yes, he will live on beyond many of us carried by the buoyancy of his influential cases in the Greater Dallas Area, and in the minds of his readers. He was just a man, but in life he accomplished in life what 100 average men could not equal combined. A lucky few got to know this man in life. His legacy will, no doubt, live on through his children, those closest to him, and those most important to him. It is to his credit to his fellow man that he will be survived in death not only through those he left behind, but his will work will continue to influence and flourish throughout many lifetimes. We are all richer for knowing Rick in a wealth that cannot be measured in gold; it is through this wealth that he will be a credit to all of mankind. Not too bad for “ just a man”; if, we were all so accomplished, or at least strived toward it the world would be filled with riches beyond our imagining.
