C. L. McCuistion

June 28, 1923 — August 23, 2018

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, mentor, banker, C.L. (Mac) McCuistion Jr., age 95, passed away peacefullyon Thursday, August 23, 2018. The youngest of three children born to C.L. McCuistion and Bessie Sanderson McCuistion, he was born in Valley View, Texas on June 28, 1923. He grew up on a farm in Valley View and an “older woman”, Kathryn Smith, was his girl and eventually his bride of 77 years. Mac was the ultimate high school athlete and the quarterback of the Valley View Eagles’ football team. He also received his first taste of banking at the Valley View National Bank. Following graduation, he and Kathryn got married and moved to Henrietta, Texas where banking called to him again. Their first son Dennis was born a year later in Wichita Falls. Two years and a stint in the army in California saw the birth of a second son, Jerry. Out of the army, Mac and Kathryn and the boys would move to Forney, Texas, where Mac lived for the rest of his life. After joining the Farmers National Bank, he soon joined the Forney State Bank and became the consummate community banker. He soon became president of the bank and served his clients for over 50 years at the Forney State Bank and through all its name changes, finishing his career at the prestigious American National Bank of Terrell at its Forney branch. He also co-founded B.O. Richman Auto Sales where he sold and financed cars for hundreds ofForney customers. The original owners of the bank were O.W. and Florence Reagin and their insurance company, O.W. Reagin Insurance was something Mac also ran and eventually owned up to the time of his death. Mac was active in the American Legion and was thrilled to march down Fifth Avenue in New York City in 1951. He played fast pitch softball for years and was an avid 42 player with other couples and all the kids and grandkids. Mac was often known as Mr. Forney, and he served the Boy Scouts for 50 years. He was the Forney Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1997. He was the video person for high school football games, and was the outspoken Monday morning quarterback when the Forney Jackrabbits lost on Friday night. He was a volunteer fireman, was active in bankers associations, and he was so proud of having been a member of the Masonic Lodge and an endowed member of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Dallas. Early on, Mac accepted Jesus as his Savior, and he was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Forney, and its treasurer for more years than anyone knows. A child of the depression, he believed in saving and investing money, and he taught thousands of bank clients to manage money well. Weeks before he died, someone came by his hospital room to tell him how important his financial advice had been to him over the years. Mac was especially proud of Lee Roy Mitchell, the founder of Cinemark, and who had considered Mac his mentor. Mac served on the North Texas Municipal Water District board for over 40 years. But he reserved his major love for his family. He and Kathryn were blessed with another son, Alan, in 1952 and then finally a girl, Ann in 1953. Kathryn was the love of his life, and she did her best to take care of him right up to the end. Mac made sure that his sons all were Jackrabbit quarterbacks. Ann was a cheerleader. More importantly, he and Kathryn made sure that all the kids got a college degree. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Rita Mae Atkinson and Willie B. Ward, his son Jerry, and granddaughter Gina. Mac is survived by his wife Kathryn, son Dennis and wife Judy, son Alan, daughter Ann and husband Nick Nichols. He left 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and numerous other family members. At Christmas, he and Kathryn were known to say as all the family gathered around, “Look what we’ve responsible for.” He was proud of each and every one, in the family but was known to let his opinion be heard if someone stepped out of line. Pops and Pawpaw were the terms of endearment used by the grandchildren, especially when they came to swim in the family pool. Mac was tough -- he endured 8 years of thrice weekly dialysis treatments in Terrell, and he drove himself there and back until 3 weeks before his death. He could be gruff as well, but he was respected by all even though he could be the most stubborn, opinionated person in the room. His kids take pride in not having these traits themselves!!! The funeral will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Forney on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at 3:00pm with visitation from 2:00pm-3:00pm at the church. It will be followed by refreshments and a reception in the fellowship hall immediately afterwards. Interment will be held at the Hillcrest Cemetery in a private ceremony at a later date. In lieu of flowers, interested parties are asked to make donations to the First United Methodist Church of Forney, 414 W Broad St, Forney, Texas 75126, or to their charity of choice. An online registry will be found at NewhopeFH.com.
