Franklin Delano Self

Franklin D. Self, 83 Franklin D. Self, of Mesquite, Texas (formerly of Belleville, Illinois) passed away at his residence on November 17, 2017, surrounded by his loving wife of 60 years, his children, and a special niece. Mr. Self, was born in East St. Louis, Illinois on August 10, 1934, to Rosie and Tilford Self. He was born into a large family during the depression and was on his own by the age of 14. Mr. Self, entered the United States Air Force at the age of 17 and served his country for more than 4 years. Franklin, worked for 30 years for Pennsylvania Truck lines and was a member of Teamsters Local 50. He and his family were members of St. Mary’s Church in Belleville, Illinois for 29 plus years. He served as an usher for the Saturday evening mass for many years. As a hardworking man, he always put his children and family first. Namely, providing his children a Christian education through the parochial school system at St. Mary’s. He was preceded in death by his brothers William Self and John Self as well as his sisters Rosie Schmidt and Grace Connor. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Nancy (nee Smith), his children Michael (Virginia) Self of Springfield, Illinois, B. David (Judy) Self of Freeburg, Illinois, Jennifer (Michael) Metzger of Forney, Texas, and Daniel (Holly) Self of The Colony, Texas. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Alicia Griffin (Brian), Michael A. Self, Sheilah Morrison (Joe), Mark Metzger, and Alana Metzger. Great-Grandchildren include, Rylee Morrison, Bailee Morrison, Brantley Griffin, Brynlee Griffin, Brystol Griffin, Emma Griffin, and Elle Griffin. Other survivors include his brother Sherman Self, sister Mary McElligott, Rachael (Juanita) Boatman, sisters-in-law Linda Couch and Sandra Burfield, many beloved nieces, nephews, special niece and nephew, Mitzy and David Schutte, and Family, Services will be held at New Hope Funeral Home in Mesquite, Texas on Saturday November 25, 2017. Family will greet visitors at 11:30a.m. Services will begin at 12:00p.m. officiated by Fr. James Yamauchi of St. Martin of Tours in Talty, Texas. Memorials may be made in his honor to St. Martin of Tours Building Fund at 9470 Co Rd 213, Forney, Texas 75126
