Leeda Rae Day

October 15, 1934 — June 26, 2018

Leeda Rae Keeler Day was born October 15, 1934, to parents Scott and Melva Keeler in Bethel, Oklahoma.Leeda Rae always had a special place in her heart for her Oklahoma roots and considered herself an “Okie” even though she moved with her family to Texas in her early teen years. She graduated as the salutatorian of her high school class from Buena Vista High School in Imperial, Texas at the age of 16 and went on to Howard Payne College in Brownwood, graduating in 1954 at the age of 19.While at Howard Payne, she met the love of her life, Denny, on a blind date. They married in 1954 and began their life journey. After graduation, they followed Denny’s high school coaching career to DeLeon, Royse City, and finally Mesquite where they settled with their two daughters, Sherrie and Debbie, and remained for the rest of their lives. Leeda Rae began her professional career once the family moved to Mesquite. She taught at Florence Black Elementary for five years.During that time, she earned her Master’s degree from East Texas State University (presently known as TX A&M Commerce) and eventually became the school counselor at Agnew Middle School where she remained for the next 25 years. She retired from Mesquite ISD after a 30-year career of helping students.Leeda Rae was very proud of her two daughters that followed their parents’ career path into serving children in Mesquite ISD.Together, Leeda Rae, Denny, Sherrie, and Debbie accumulated 130 years of service to the district. Leeda Rae was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Denny Day, her parents, and brother Charles Keeler. She is survived by daughter Sherrie Day, daughter Debbie Shewmake and husband Pat, and two grandsons, Matt Shewmake and Todd Shewmake. She is also survived by Denny’s sisters, Darlene Day, and Betty Haire (husband John) and Denny’s brother Jim Day (wife Brenda), sister in law Loretta Harris, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Through the years, Leeda Rae enjoyed many activities including reading, the game of Bridge, spending time with family and friends, and teaching Sunday School at the church that she loved, Shiloh Terrace Baptist. Some of her most joyous moments were the times that she spent with her family and experiencing adventures with her grandchildren, Matt and Todd.During her final years, she was so grateful to her daughters for their help, love, and care.So many people along the way feel blessed to have had a role model that exemplified kindness, intelligence, compassion, strength, and a love for family, and foremost, a love for God.
