Brian James Honea

December 27, 1971 — August 27, 2021

Brian James Honea passed away August 27, 2021 in Rockwall, Texas, from complications due to COVID-19. He was born December 27, 1971 in Garland, Texas, the third child of Michael Honea and Mary Cawley Cates. He graduated from South Garland High School, Class of 1990. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and following high school he served for two years as a missionary for the church in both Tacoma, Washington and Atlanta, Georgia. On August 8, 1997, he married Gloria Vandegriff in Dallas, Texas, and they were later sealed in the LDS temple in Dallas. He obtained both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Amberton University. Being a prolific writer, Brian wrote professionally for newspapers and magazines, and authored several books. He also enjoyed listening to and playing music, taking up guitar as a teenager and bass guitar as an adult. He loved attending concerts, everything from heavy metal to classical. Brian was an avid sports nut, especially for baseball, and was a lifelong fan of the Texas Rangers. Much of his writing was sports-related. He had a huge heart, and would do anything for anybody. Family was everything to Brian.

Brian is survived by his wife, Gloria; his parents, Michael Honea, and J. Michael and Mary Cates; his siblings Kristin Curfmann, Joel Honea, and Sean Honea; also by many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. He will be sorely missed.

A memorial service, arranged by New Hope Funeral Home, will be held in his honor Saturday, September 4, at 10:00 am. Due to COVID precautions, the service is limited to family and a few close friends.
