In 1952 he was accepted into the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas fulfilling his mother's wish that he become a physician. Charles and Pat made their home in Dallas and later in Sunnyvale where they resided at the time of Charles' death.

Charles practiced Internal Medicine in Dallas for 38 years. He took care of multiple family generations in his private practice in the Lake Highlands/White Rock areas of Dallas. Following his "retirement" in 2000, he shifted his focus to other medical fields including the provision of quality medical care to Medicare beneficiaries under the Texas Medical Foundation and served as the medical director of several hospice organizations.

Charles also had a deep and profound love for his multiple English Springer Spaniel dogs, most recently his beloved, Samantha Rose, who was constantly by his side.

Charles was raised in the Baptist Church in Hallsville. He remained grounded in his Christian faith throughout his earthly life. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Dallas for many years where he served as an officer of the President's Class.
