Dorothy Ann Petersen Hohenberger

November 24, 1942 — October 9, 2021

Dorothy Ann Petersen Hohenberger, age 78, of Mesquite, TX went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 9, 2021.  She was born of Henry and Anna (Weiss) Petersen on November 24, 1942 in Omaha, NE.  Dorothy was baptized December 27, 1942 and confirmed May 20, 1956 at First Lutheran Church in Papillion, NE. Her confirmation verse was 2 Peter 3:18. “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.”

Dorothy went to Papillion High School where she graduated in 1960. She was an Honor Student and very active in school. Dorothy played volleyball, was a member of the band, Choir, Pep Club, and Student Council. She was voted Most Representative Girl and All Around Student her junior and senior years. Dorothy was the high school newspaper Editor, Sports Queen, Junior Red Cross President, and Homecoming Royalty in her senior year.

On August 1, 1964 she was united in marriage to Jimmy Lee Hohenberger at First Lutheran Church, Papillion, NE. In August 2020 they celebrated their 56th Wedding Anniversary, a few months prior to Jimmy’s passing in November 2020. To this union, two children were born: Beverly Suzanne, January 13, 1967, and Michael Sherman, June 28, 1969.

Dorothy and Jimmy moved to Dallas, TX in 1964 where they resided for five years. Dorothy began working as a Stenographer for Xerox. This is where she sharpened her shorthand skills and her attention to detail, which she continued to use as she entered into other ventures.   In 1969 they moved to Mesquite, TX where they raised their family.  Dorothy went on to work for Sears in a variety of roles in Garland and Dallas, TX, including supervising and managing teams.  She juggled family and career; often finishing dinner then clearing the kitchen table to complete bookwork for Sears. Dorothy retired from Sears after more than 30 years of service.

Dorothy enjoyed cooking, gardening, hosting gatherings, socializing and volunteering. Her friends from the neighborhood and church were especially dear to her. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, where they worked on crafts, painting, baking, and one on one time doing special activities.  She was especially fond of the annual tradition of holiday cookie and candy making with the grandkids. Dorothy loved her animals and was an avid pet adopter. Ask the grandkids about Kit. Even while in the hospital, she worried about Morris and Trisha. Dorothy enjoyed the great outdoors, working in her flowerbeds, camping, the beach, casinos, and vacations. She enjoyed watching her Nebraska Corn Huskers and could yell with the best of them.

Dorothy is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Thomas Galvez of San Antonio, TX; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael Sherman and Nina Hohenberger of Rowlett, TX; sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Ervin Kersten of Gretna, NE; step brother Edwin (Ed) Jochim of Papillion, NE; step brothers and sister-in-laws James (Jim) and Linda Jochim of Phoenix, AZ, Paul and Janell Jochim of Pingree Grove, IL; step sister Mary Jochim of Omaha, NE; step brother and sister-in-law William (Bill) and Shelly Jochim of Papillion NE, sisters-in-law, Ruby Roegels and Ruby Carol, both of Fredericksburg, TX; six grandchildren, Hannah (Seth) Peterson, Sarah, Rachel and Isabelle Hohenberger of Rowlett, TX; Mateo and Rebecca Galvez of San Antonio, TX; two great grandchildren, Beckham Bradley and Avery Grace; and several nieces, nephews, and dear cousins.
