Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Lifelong Businessman
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gilbert Jordan of Mesquite, Texas, who peacefully departed this world on September 6, 2025, at the age of 85. Gilbert lived a long and fulfilling life marked by service to his country, unwavering dedication to his family, and a deep-rooted passion for business and adventure.
Gilbert answered the call to serve his nation as a member of the National Guard, dedicating six years to the Guard, one of those on active duty during the tense days of the Berlin Crisis. He was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he contributed to the defense of American ideals at a critical moment in history.
Upon returning home, Gilbert joined his brother Harold in the family grocery business started by his parents Bud and Eva Jordan. In 1970, Gilbert opened Jordan's Supermarket in Mesquite, Texas. Gilbert's brother Melvin joined the family business thereafter. His tireless work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit made him a pillar of the community. Over the years, he expanded into several different retail business pursuits with his son Darrin, remaining a devoted businessman throughout his life.
Gilbert's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Josephine with whom he shared 67 wonderful years; his two children Darrin Jordan and Kimberly Jordan-Miller and husband Mark; grandchildren Devin Banks and her husband Bryan, and Dawson; great grandchildren Reese, Kinsley, and Carter; aunt Louise Coomer; nieces and nephews Richard Jordan, Pam Burgin and husband Frank, Russell Jordan, Aaron Jordan, and Michael Jordan and wife Casie; and numerous cousins.
Outside of work, Gilbert embraced life with joy and enthusiasm. He was a quail hunter, a skilled private pilot, and a spirited go-cart racing enthusiast. He relished trips to Las Vegas, where he indulged in games of chance surrounded by family and friends. Some of his fondest memories were made at Cedar Creek Lake, captaining his boat and enjoying the tranquility of the water. On weekends at the lake, Gilbert was regularly atop his John Deere tractor mowing the grass. He took pride in having the most beautiful lawn in the neighborhood, seeing it as a reflection of his care and attention to detail. A true automotive aficionado, Gilbert owned several sports cars throughout his life and lovingly restored a classic Ford Model A. He also deeply enjoyed watching football, celebrating the highs and lows of the sport with loved ones.
Gilbert was truly a character, known for his lively sense of humor and playful spirit. He delighted in scaring people at Halloween, orchestrating unforgettable pranks that were talked about for years. A renowned practical joker, Gilbert's mischief brought laughter and lightness to every gathering, making him a cherished figure among family and friends.
Gilbert will be remembered for his boundless energy, adventurous spirit, and the kindness he showed to all who crossed his path. His legacy lives on in the thriving businesses he built, the family he adored, and the countless lives he touched.
The family wishes to thank all who have offered their condolences, support, and love during this time. Gilbert's memory will forever live on, a testament to a life well-lived and a man deeply loved.
