Jimmy L. Hohenberger

Jimmy Lee Hohenberger, age 81, of Mesquite, TX. went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 13, 2020. He was born of Alvin and Ruby Hohenberger on October 1, 1939 at the family homestead 5 miles south of Fredericksburg, TX. He was baptized May 5, 1940 in Giddings, TX and was confirmed May 9, 1965 at Zion Lutheran Church, Dallas, TX. Jimmy's first five years of school were at Meusebach Community School, then transferred to Fredericksburg public schools where he graduated May 1958. He attended college at Sam Houston State University where he earned a BS degree in Criminal Justice. He served in the US Army, December, 1961- 1963, as a Pvt. 1st Class. His most memorable times in the US Army were the Cuban Missile Crisis and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. On August 1, 1964 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Ann Petersen at First Lutheran Church, Papillion, NE. In August 2020 they celebrated their 56th Wedding Anniversary. To this union, two children were born: Beverly Suzanne, January 13, 1967, and Michael Sherman, June 28, 1969. Jimmy and Dorothy moved to Dallas, TX in 1964 where they resided for five years while Jimmy was a Police Officer for the Dallas Police Department. In 1969 they moved to Mesquite, TX where they raised their family. Jimmy went to work at the Dallas Morning News in 1974 in the Security Department and became the Assistant Security Officer. He left the Morning News in 1985 to work for the Frito-Lay Security Department where he retired on February 12, 2003. Jimmy was an avid gun enthusiast, deer hunter, and in his youth, a trapper. He loved spending time with his family, the great outdoors, animals, gardening on the farm, camping, the beach, and vacations. He enjoyed watching football and baseball. He was also a coach and umpired for Little League Sports. Jimmy is survived by his wife, Dorothy Petersen Hohenberger; his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Thomas Galvez of San Antonio, TX; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael Sherman and Nina Hohenberger of Rowlett, TX; sisters-in-law, Ruby Roegels and Ruby Carol, both of Fredericksburg, TX; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Ervin Kersten of Gretna, NE; six grandchildren, Hannah (Seth) Peterson, Sarah, Rachel and Isabelle Hohenberger of Rowlett, TX; Mateo and Rebecca Galvez of San Antonio, TX; two great grandchildren, Beckham Bradley and Avery Grace; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Alvin and Ruby Hohenberger, brother and sister-in-law, Calvin and Elaine Weber, brothers Jerry Hohenberger and LeRoy Hohenberger all of Fredericksburg, TX. Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ernie and Jackie Petersen of Papillion, NE. Visitation will be held Friday, November 20, 2020, beginning at 1:00 PM at Tree of Life Lutheran Church (6318 Lyons Road, Garland, TX 75043) followed by service officiated by Rev. Mark Couser beginning at 2:00 PM. A livestream of the service can be viewed using the following link: https://www.facebook.com/TreeofLifeLCMS Visitation will be held on Monday, November 23, 2020, beginning at 10:00 AM at the Meusebach Cemetery (912 US-87, Fredericksburg, TX 78624) followed by a graveside service officiated by Rev. Ron Windecker beginning at 11:00 AM. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing at both events. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Tree of Life Lutheran Church, Birds of Prey, or a charity of your choice.
