Listen to Obituary

Laura J. (Upshaw) Csury was born in San Carlos, Arizona on June 3, 1951 and was a full-blooded Apache Indian and member of the San Carols Apache Indian Tribe. In 1967, she moved to Dallas, Texas and had currently been living in Mesquite, TX for the last 20 years. She last worked for Deloitte & Touche for 10 years and before that over 15 years with Sandwich Chef Deli in locations throughout downtown Dallas.

Laura is survived by two daughters, Gloria Sandel-Avila and her husband Larry Avila of Mesquite, TX and Sandra Skodak and her husband Carmen Skodak of Wylie, TX. She is also survived by two sisters, Daisy Upshaw and Niece Rosie Upshaw and Mary Whitehair and her brother in-law George Whitehair and Niece Patty Dia and her husband Ross Dia and Niece Pearl Flores.

Laura was preceded in death by her husband Frank Nez and her parents, John and Winona Upshaw and her sisters Frances Brown, Isabelle James, Angelita Noline and Marcella Mallow; her brothers Fred Upshaw and Arthur Upshaw and her great-grandson Milo Spaniel.

Laura was full of life and loved to talk with people and had many boyfriends. She loved her Coke, sausage & biscuit and Decaf coffee from McDonalds, Target popcorn, Dollar Tree and Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback with the Kansas City Chiefs.

She touched many lives, but her family was the heart of her life. Many will hold Laura in their hearts, but no one more than her grandchildren, Tracy Fields, Jr. and his wife Justyna Fields; Ashley Regal and her husband Kyle Regal; Trevor Fields, Taylor Spaniel and her husband Parker Spaniel; Loren Avila and his partner Skyla Velasquez, Aubrey Avila and Chloe Avila. Matthew Skodak and his wife Liz. Dawn Goar and her husband Preston. Kirstan Richards and her husband Steven. Faith Johnson and her husband Grant. And great-grandchildren, Macy Regal, Jack Regal, Isa Pereira, and Brooklynne Richards.

She loved making quilts and if she knew anyone having a baby, she would make a quilt for their child or grandchild. She will be missed by the many children who knew her in Mesquite who called her "Granny" or "Grandma." Every Easter, Halloween and Christmas holiday she had a group of kids in the neighborhood that she would hand-deliver a small gift to their home.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 6th at 2PM at New Hope Funeral Home 500 US Hwy. 80-E, Sunnyvale, TX 75182.
