Martha Sue Surrena

In a two room house with no electricity, southwest of Bonham, in Fannin County Texas, near Edhube around 6:30 a.m. a ten pound baby girl was born. After 48 hours of labor her mom vowed never to have but this one and only child who her parents John and Bennie Whaley loved and spoiled and so entered the world, Martha Sue.

She and her parents lived in Bonham where she worked at the local pharmacy and graduated from Bonham High School in 1951.

They moved to Crane, Texas the following year where she met Lee Donald Brown. They dated for three months and married December 25, 1952.

In October1953 they had their first child, Donna Sue. They moved to the Dallas area in May of 1954. The family moved around for a couple of years until they settled in Zipp City/Balch Springs area. Martha Sue and her little girl started to Sunday School and church at First Baptist Church Zipp City. In April 1957, Martha Sue had been struggling spiritually and she had a visit from her Grandpa Scroggins that changed her life forever. They read Acts 9 together. When her Grandpa left she went into her bathroom and kneeled on her knees and asked Jesus into her heart.

Seven months later, November 1957 they had a son Jerry Donald. Now, Martha Sue and her two children attended church together.

In 1958, they all four began serving in churches for about 17 years.

Martha Sue and Lee divorced in 1975.

She continued to be faithful in her service to her Savior.

She met Ray Surrena at Gethsemane Baptist Church in 1980. Christmas Eve that year, he brought her a present by the house but since she had not told her family about their relationship she slammed the door in his face. They married in March 1981 and prayed and worshipped together until he passed from this life to his eternal home May 2019. Martha Sue has been longing to go to her heavenly home ever since.

On November 14, 2022 after playing hours of dominos with friends and family she went home a little confused She sat down in her recliner not feeling well and had a stroke. On November 15, 2022 her prayer was answered she went to her heavenly home where she is worshipping and praising her Lord and Savior.

She is preceded in death by her parents, grandpa and husband.

She is survived by: Daughter - Donna and husband Robert Murphy; Son - Jerry and wife Tammie; grands - Jason/Michelle, Angy/David, Eric/Amy, Benjamin/Misty, Travis/Amber and Justin/Tori; greats - Zachary, Maya, Madalynn, Zander, Jayse, Alix, Kylie, Jude, Micah, Noah, Jax, Joshua, Jeremiah and Charlotte
