Virginia "Gini" Roquemore Gray

Virginia "Gini" Roquemore Gray was born on January 28, 1944 in Shreveport, LA, and passed away on August 23, 2026 in Sachse, TX.

Born Virginia Louise Roquemore, Gini was preceded in death by her parents James Owens "Rock" and Bonnie Garrett Roquemore; sister Daphne Lewis; husband Jimmy Ray Gray and daughter-in-law Janice Gray.

Gini is survived by son Kevin Ray Gray; daughter Kathy Gray Cummings and son-in-law Shannon Andrew "Andy" Cummings. Also by Kevin's sons, Christopher Gray, Michael Gray and wife Lorena, Stephen Gray and wife Emily, and Mason Gray. And by Kathy & Andy's sons, Harper Cummings and Harrison Cummings. And by great-grandchildren: Quentin Gray, Rylan and Lola Gray, and Daniel, Olivia and Landen Gray. All of the grandchildren called her "Mamaw."

She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Mark Lewis and his family; sister Dale Roquemore Collinsworth; cousins Linda Gray Young, Stayton Oliver, Louise Nelson, and many other relatives and their families.

Gini met the love of her life at college at Louisiana Tech. Gini was married to Jimmy in 1965 and flourished as a stay-at-home mom, staying very involved with her children and the church. She was multi-talented with creative passions for sewing, crafts and gardening. She sewed many clothes and quilts for family and friends. She even made matching dresses and purses for her and Kathy to wear together, and formal dresses for Kathy throughout her school years.

One of the family hobbies and pastimes was sailing and Gini would always help with the boat and pack all the goodies for meals and snacks. They were members of the Dallas Sailing Club and raced throughout the years, as well as weekends at the lake with family and friends. They even named their sailboat "Flutterby" because Gini loved butterflies!

Gini was also the best stay at home mom who spent so much time with her children and grandchildren. Her favorite hobby with Kathy was shopping, where when they would come home, Jimmy would ask for the fashion show. Then he would ask "Ok, so what are you going to return?" (Because something always gets returned and it became the running family joke from Jimmy.)

Gini was a member of the Mesquite Women's Club, the Sunnyvale Garden Club, and was involved in women's groups wherever she could, often serving as an officer when the opportunity arose. She was also involved with Presbyterian Women and even received the lifetime membership award.

Their friend group had many dinners together whether at one of their houses or going out to eat. They also went country dancing a time or two. She always bragged about what a great friend group they had, which were all from First Presbyterian Church in Mesquite.

She had many friends that sewed along with her, some taking Bernina classes with her. Gini also helped Kathy and Janice learn with many sewing tips. Gini made several quilts for the family to cherish.

Gini spent the last few years of her life in an assisted living community and then in December of 2025 moved to a wonderful new memory care facility just a mile from Kathy's house, with a really cute room for Gini that Kathy enjoyed decorating for her. Gini made a lot of close friends at her place, including all her caregivers. In the last few years of her life, she loved playing bingo, being part of a small book club and enjoying music entertainment.

Gini suffered from a form of vascular dementia and in the last years of her life struggled to be her "whole self" and normal "Mama" as she would want since her brain just wouldn't cooperate. But she never forgot who her family and friends were and was still able to communicate. Kathy spent many days looking at old family pictures with her and Gini telling all the stories from the past. The family was blessed that she never lost her memory of family all the way to the end.

Kathy's favorite quote from Gini was "Tell me something I don't know." Gini would ask that of her kids and grandchildren often. So, I'm sure she'd like to share that with all of you. Spark up a conversation with those you love. Keep family ties strong. Be compassionate and caring and be a host to all in your life, as Mama was. Mama always made everyone feel so welcome and made sure everyone had what they needed and gave so much of her love.
