William "Smiling Bill" Kucera, 85, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Bill was born on November 4, 1940, in Penelope, Texas, to William Kucera Sr. and Sophie Adam Kucera. He graduated from Penelope High School in 1959 and moved to Dallas the following year. In 1962, he proudly served his country by joining the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Lance Corporal.
In 1963, Bill married the love of his life, Louise Snapka Kucera, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in music, family, faith, and tradition. He earned a degree in Electronics from El Centro Community College and built a successful career working for Texas Instruments and AT&T before retiring from Lucent Technologies after 30 years of dedicated service.
Bill had a deep love for music and was a talented musician, playing the button accordion, guitar, and electric bass. In 1969, he and Louise founded the Czechmates Polka Band, which later became the Alpine Village Band. Their musical legacy spanned 47 years and was passed on to their son, Wes. Today, that tradition continues through The Dogensteins.
He remained actively involved in his community, serving on the Board of Directors of the National Accordion Association from 2011 to 2015 and on the Board of Directors of the Catholic Czech Club from 2011 to 2014.
Bill was an avid Taroky player and a self-taught artist who created many beautiful oil paintings. He had a fondness for poppyseed kolaches, though anything with coconut was always a favorite treat. He cherished time spent with his family-Wes, Tracy, Alex, and Rachel-enjoying laughter, meaningful conversations, and spirited card games.
Some of Bill's happiest moments were the simple ones, including days spent at the horse races with his son Wes-especially when they were winning. Together, they became a formidable team on the tournament circuit, earning multiple berths to the National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Louise Kucera; his son and daughter-in-law, Wes and Tracy Kucera; and his cherished grandchildren, Alex and Rachel Kucera. He is also lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Edwin Joe Kucera; his sisters, Leona Kucera Kadlubar and Rosie Lee Kucera Atkins; and his niece, Joyce, and nephew, Kenneth.
